About Shoalwater Islands Marine Park

Located along the southern Puget Sound near the town of Tokeland, Washington, Shoalwater Islands Marine Park encompasses a collection of small islands, tidal flats, and ocean waters that provide critical habitat for numerous marine species. The park includes four main islands—Anderson, Bethel, Hartstine, and East and West Sand Islands—surrounded by rich eelgrass beds and tidelands that support shellfish, shorebirds, fish, and marine mammals. The area is renowned for its vibrant populations of seals and sea lions, several species of shorebirds including sandpipers and herons, and serves as a breeding and haul-out site. Visitors can enjoy kayaking through calm waters, exploring intertidal zones during low tide, or birdwatching from scenic viewpoints. Fishing and crabbing are popular in permitted areas, while whale watching is also a seasonal attraction nearby. Historic use by local Native American tribes and the fishing communities of the Pacific Northwest add cultural depth to the park. Easy access from nearby Tokeland makes it a popular destination for family-friendly outdoor recreation, marine education, and conservation efforts. The park is managed by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, with emphasis on protecting fragile ecosystems while encouraging low-impact recreation.
